Let’s talk about Modes of Operation

Managing a building is a difficult task given the number of parameters that need to be controlled. But there is a way to ease the burden without sacrificing performance (in fact, while optimizing it). To find out how, read on.

If you manage a building (or a portfolio of buildings), our guess is that your drive to work is considerably easier than the eight (or more) hours you spend on the job once you’ve arrived. Don’t worry… we’re going somewhere with this thought!

It turns out that the drive to work and your time at work both have at least one thing in common, though: they’re reliant on technology to get you to where you want to go.

So, question: why might your drive to work be easier? Well, here’s one good reason:  your car manufacturer has thoughtfully built modes of operation into its vehicles, which means you can easily switch between, for instance, economy and sport modes or wet condition mode and dry condition mode, according to what’s available and how you require the car to perform at any given time. What do those modes do? In a nutshell, enhance your driving performance with little or no additional effort required from you.

Now, wouldn’t it be nice if the same concept applied to your EMS/BMS?  That’s not just wishful thinking. It is in fact a reality. And with good reason: managing and operating a vast portfolio of buildings can be overwhelming for energy and building managers (considerably more overwhelming than driving a car). Adjusting setpoints, schedules, damper settings, energy loads, and predicting weather can be daunting tasks.

That’s why NexRev has drawn inspiration from the automotive industry to introduce Building Operation Modes—a standard set of operating modes for buildings similar to the automotive equivalents we mentioned above. In an Energy and Building Management System (EMS/BMS) these "modes of operation" refer to predefined sets of configurations and operational strategies designed to manage the building's environment and energy usage efficiently. Modes help optimize the performance of various building systems such as HVAC, lighting, and security, adapting to different conditions and requirements.

Modes of operation by NexRev

NexRev offers three building modes: Normal, Moderate, and Aggressive to benefit the facilities manager. These modes cover the most common scenarios and settings needed by energy and building managers, allowing operators to control the energy profile and curtailment for a building both more easily and more effectively. The benefits?

  • Simplified Operations: Adjust all relevant settings for all equipment within a building or across a portfolio with a single operation.
  • Significant Time and Energy Savings: Implement energy-saving strategies effortlessly with pre-programmed and intelligent optimization routines.
  • User-Friendly: Even novice users can achieve significant energy savings with a single selection.

NexRev’s Building Operation Modes bring efficiency, ease, and effectiveness to managing a building for optimal energy usage and cost savings.
